When game developer Sam Glassenberg’s daughter was diagnosed at age five, life changed overnight. Suddenly, running a videogame studio became his “second job” as he embraced his new role as a stand-in pancreas. The onboarding process was brutal and unforgiving.
As a game developer, Sam chronicled the experience in a diary/blog.
Sam realized that the onboarding journey of Type 1 Diabetes somehow takes all of the best-practices for designing a fun game and somehow inverts them to create the opposite effect – a punishing experience for patient and caregiver alike. For this reason, he titled the blog “The Worst. Game. Ever.” which he eventually published here:
It was this experience that would eventually provide the inspiration for actually fixing the problem, using the neuroscience-based design of videogames.
